Spotlight on Young-In Bae by Sarah
An Unseen Skaters special. December 6, 2003.

Young-In Bae, 15, is coached by Evy Scotvold in South Dennis, MA.  Sheryl Franks is her choreographer.  Bae skates for the Skating Club of Boston.  She finished 4th in Junior Ladies at the 2004 New England Regional Championships in October 2003 and 9th at the Eastern Sectional Championships in November 2003.

When and how did you begin skating?
I began rollerskating when I was 6 years old.  From there I switched to ice skates and I have loved it ever since.

What are your long-term goals, on and off the ice?
My long-term goals are to someday go to the Olympics and represent the United States, also working on becoming a skater everyone loves to watch and look up to.  After high school, I plan to go to college, and someday participate in modeling.

Who has had the greatest influence on your skating?
My parents have had the greatest influence on me because they sacrifice a lot for me to be able to skate and, no matter what, they are always there to support me even if I don't skate well.  They are my biggest fans and supporters.

Who are are your favorite skaters and why?
Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen are my all-time favorite skaters.  I admire Michelle for her consistency and her choreography -- you can always count on her to skate a good program.  I admire Sasha because of her flexibility and everything she does on the ice is perfect.  She is a beautiful skater and a beautiful girl as well.

Do you have a favorite jump, spin and connecting move?
My favorite jump is the double axel -- even though I like all of them, I enjoy working on this the most.  My favorite spins are layback and flying camel.  I don't really have a favorite connecting move.

What do you feel are the strongest and weakest aspects of your skating?
I feel that my choreography, spins, and spirals are my strongest aspects, and that my jumps are my weakest.

What music did you skate to this past season (2003-04)?
The music I skated to was The Skulls soundtrack for my short, and for my long, the soundtracks from Ever After/E.T./The Other Side of the Mountain.

Describe and evaluate your programs at Regionals and Sectionals.  What did you think of your performances?
My program at Regionals I thought was one of my best skates.  I landed both of my double axels, but fell on a triple toe.  I still thought it was a great skate for me.  My program at Easterns I thought could have been better.  It was my first Easterns and I was a little nervous, but I had a lot of fun and it was a great experience for me to keep in mind for the future.

What are some of your off-ice hobbies?
Some of my off-ice hobbies include shopping, working out, being with my friends, swimming and listening to music.

Why do you love to skate?
I love to skate because I have lots of fun being on the ice.  It gives me a feeling of being free and it feels like nothing else matters.
